What Qualzy Actually Built

Qualzy processes qualitative research responses automatically and in real time — generating per-response summaries, key points, and verbatim quotes as participants submit. Unlike platforms that added AI as a retrospective analysis layer, Qualzy built AI into the core data pipeline, so every video upload, text post, and form answer becomes structured insight immediately, without manual tagging or post-fieldwork processing.

When AI tools started arriving in force, every research technology platform faced the same fundamental choice: integrate AI everywhere as quickly as possible, or take the slower, harder route of asking where it actually addresses specific researcher needs. The first approach wins press releases. The second wins trust.

Qualzy chose the latter - and without sacrificing pace. We were among the earliest research technology developers to launch AI features in our platform, but the question driving every decision wasn't "what can we add?" It was "what does a researcher actually need this to do?"

That distinction matters enormously. The research profession is not short of tools that promise to transform workflow but end up creating new layers of checking, correcting and second-guessing. Our guiding principle from the start has been clear: AI research technologies shouldn't be designed to replace human research professionals, but help them to work more effectively, efficiently and productively so they can serve their clients better.

The early stages of a qual project involve a lot of translation work - turning a client brief into research objectives, and research objectives into engaging participant activities. It's intellectually demanding work, and it's also where momentum matters. A slow start tends to set the tone for everything that follows.

This is AI working as a moderator's assistant rather than a replacement - drawing attention to opportunities the researcher might otherwise miss in the sheer volume of responses coming in. 4. Analysis

This is where Qualzy's AI makes its most significant difference. The traditional bottleneck in qual research has always been the gap between data collection and insight generation - the hours spent watching videos, reading through responses, manually coding and categorising before any real analysis can begin.

Qualzy's AI automatically generates key points from every participant submission the moment it arrives. For text responses, this means the signal is extracted from the noise in real time. For video submissions - and this is where the impact is most dramatic - a 20-minute recording is automatically transcribed, and key points are extracted from that transcript, each with supporting verbatims that can be turned directly into clips. A dataset that would previously have required days of immersive review becomes structured, navigable insight within minutes of each response being submitted.

Pulling in quotes, identifying the strongest supporting verbatims, checking that a finding is well evidenced - these tasks that eat into reporting time are significantly reduced. What remains is exactly the work that should require a human: shaping the narrative, making sense of the data, and translating insight into action.

Researcher-first, always

The features described above didn't arrive in a single release. They've been developed iteratively, tested rigorously, and refined based on how researchers actually use them. Qualzy's approach to AI is cautious in the best sense: we prioritise data security and GDPR compliance at every stage, and we test whether each capability genuinely enhances researcher capability before it ships.

That means some things that look impressive in a demo have been held back because they didn't pass our own internal test: does this actually help, or does it just look like it helps? It's a question we take seriously, because researchers who are let down by AI features don't just stop using them - they stop trusting the platform.
